How to Clear Cache on Mac Safely (Without Breaking Apps)

If your Mac feels “full” even though you didn’t install anything, it’s usually cache. The trick is to clear the stuff that can regenerate—without poking system folders you shouldn’t touch.

1) Clear browser cache (quick win)

Safari:

  • Safari → Settings → Advanced → enable “Show features for web developers”
  • Develop → Empty Caches

Chrome:

  • Chrome → Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data

2) Clear app caches (user folder only)

  1. Open Finder
  2. Press Cmd + Shift + G
  3. Go to ~/Library/Caches
  4. Delete the contents inside each app folder (don’t delete the folders themselves)

Restart the app afterward.

3) Don’t forget Mail attachments

Mail can store a lot of local attachment data.

If Mail is the culprit, use: mac-mail-attachment-cleaner.

4) If you want “one click”

Try CleanDiskGo:

  • Clears app caches safely
  • Finds bulky leftovers
  • Saves you from digging in hidden folders

Also worth pairing with: mac-large-file-finder.
